"In the late 1980's, when Michael and I first met in Brooklyn, there was an instant chemistry between us both personally and musically. A few years later, when we decided to take our chances in the studio together as a duet, the music was simply stellar - particularly the "non-jazz" new music material. I'll never forget the thrill of discovery as I reviewed our fresh studio masters and realizing that we had a gorgeous disc of modern music waiting to be culled from just a half day of collaboration. As I recall, the program sequence fell into place rapidly as we had a couple of through composed/improvised twenty minute movements to guide us. The striking modern classical aesthetics of the material leapt off of the speakers. A testament to two complimentary artists exploring together their combined aesthetic imaginations. "Phil and I recorded this improvised duo release thirty years ago. At that time, we were both neighbors living in Brooklyn. Every few days I would walk a couple of blocks to Phil’s house and we would either play, talk about or listen to music. Windsor Terrace was a hot bed of musical talent. Our neighbors included Dave Douglas, Mark Feldman, Lily White, Herb Robertson, Mark Dresser, Billy Hart, Jeff Lederer, Michael Formanek and many others. Rehearsals were a daily occurrence. We always wanted to release this music but life moved us in a myriad of other directions. After listening to this music again thirty years later I can honestly say that this is some of the best “improvised” music I have ever played. Thanks for listening. Thanks Phil!!!"
